The Mercedes-Benz Vito is a light van produced by Mercedes-Benz in Vitoria, Spain. From the name of the city Vitoria came the name Vito. It is available as a standard panel van, or with additional passenger accommodation substituted for part or all of the load area. The first generation Mercedes-Benz Vito was produced between 1996 and 2003. The second generation Mercedes-Benz Vito is more streamlined than its predecessor, but more importantly is powered by a new range of engines and a rear-wheel drive (RWD) drive train. The newer Vito is available in 3 different lengths and 4 diesel engine versions being the 109 CDI, the 111 CDI, the 115 CDI (all powered by a 4 cylinder 2.2 liter engine) and the more powerful 120 CDI (featuring the 3.0 liter V6 unit). Load volumes range between 4.65 and 6.49 cubic meters. All models are available with gross vehicle weights of either 2,770 or 2,940 kg and payloads range from 855 to 1,025 kg. Vitos have the option of tailgate or conventional twin doors, which can either open to 180 degrees or 270 degrees. The sliding doors are big enough for standard Euro pallets to be loaded and the width between wheel arches – 1,277 mm – allows up to three Euro pallets to be loaded one behind another. There is also an extra load space beneath the front seats, provided of course that a full bulkhead is not fitted.

Here’s an example of the Mercedes Vito converted by Syncro System New Zealand. It includes everything necessary to create a fully functional laboratory on wheels. From accessories to racking components, you can find everything in the Syncro catalog.

Looking in detail at this Vito conversion, we see that the left-hand side racking unit is composed of two wheel arch base frames (with base boards), two drawer units with a total of eight drawers, with a high spacious shelf toward the back doors. The top shelf is divided in two: on the left, a simple open shelf, and on the right, a closed compartment complete with track for positioning straps (to secure cargo during transit), and a wooden base. On the end panel of the unit, we mounted a paper towel roll holder, plus a strap and clasp storage system. On the right-hand side, we installed a slightly smaller unit with a closed wheel arch base, mounted to the resin-coated plywood floor panel, two drawers and a wooden worktop with raised back and sides and complete with another track for securing cargo. One of the points of interest of this conversion is the drawer at the bottom of the racking unit near the bulkhead - it makes excellent use of otherwise unused space. Another track system was mounted half way up the bulkhead to transport extra cargo.

Choosing the right accessories can really boost the functionality of your working van. This van owner chose four hanging cable holders to keep cables and tubing stored neatly, safely, and out of the way. There are also accessories for cleaning up: the hand-washing kit, (mounted conveniently on the back door to avoid water spilling in the van), a paper towel roll holder, and the always handy professional-use cleaning wipes. Other accessories include a bracket for jerry cans. Along the bulkhead we positioned a track that can be used in combination with straps and clasps for securing all kinds of cargo. In this picture, a telescoping ladder is ready for transit.
