The Volkswagen Crafter, introduced in 2006, is the largest 3 to 5 tonne van sold by Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles.

Based on the high-end Mercedes Sprinter, the Crafter officially replaced the 31 year old LT nameplate, although it is known as the LT3 as its production plant code. The Crafter is built in the Mercedes-Benz Ludwigsfelde and Düsseldorf plants, the same German factories where the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter is built. In the 1990s, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles and Daimler AG's Mercedes-Benz Commercial Unit produced the first generation Sprinter and the second generation Volkswagen LT in a joint development project.

The superseded second generation Volkswagen LT, and the current Crafter share their automobile platform and body shells with their Mercedes-Benz Sprinter counterparts, but the front grille styling, internal combustion engines and transmissions remain Volkswagen Group sourced. All internal combustion engines are based upon Volkswagen Group's re-engineered 2.5 liter R5 TDI.

The Crafter is available in three wheelbase options; 3,250 mm, 3,665 mm and 4,325 mm. There are three roof eights - normal, high and super high. There will also be chassis cabs and crew cabs. Gross vehicle weights range from 3.0 to 5.0 tones and load volumes range from 7.0 cubic meters to 17 cubic meters.

There are endless ways you can design the Volkswagen Crafter conversion, thanks to the modularity of the Syncro System racking components. In the example above, the racking units have been installed along the left-hand side and the bulkhead. The right-hand side remains open, for the loading and transporting of equipment and materials.

The left-hand side consists of a wheel arch frame base with front door panel, drawer units with a total of five metal drawers stacked one on top of the other, and two spacious shelves. The bulkhead unit consists of another wheel arch frame base (this one open), complete with the Syncro safe case storage system, and includes a drawer unit with ten drawers of varying sizes. Moving upward, we find two additional shelves for more storage of smaller tools and parts. Both include rubber mats and metal dividers for keeping items separate and in place during transit.

Syncro New Zealand has an enormous range of accessories for vans. On this Crafter, we mounted the paper towel roll holder, a pull-out vise base / worktop including steel vise, a neon ceiling light, and the track and strap system along the right-hand side for safely securing even large and bulky cargo.

The racking units for this conversion are concentrated along the two side walls. We added lots of handy accessories, including the paper towel roll holder, first aid kit, vise and pull-out vise base / worktop, and three Syncro track and strap systems for securing even bulky/heavy objects. A bright neon ceiling light was mounted near the bulkhead. It lights the entire cargo space and draws its energy from the vehicle’s battery.

Moving on to the racking equipment, on the left-hand side, the technicians at Syncro System New Zealand installed two large storage compartments with front door panels (one on top of the other), an open shelf, and at the top, a drawer unit with forward-tilting, clear plastic drawers.

On the right-hand side, we also began with the wheel arch base frame (with front door panel), to which we mounted a drawer unit divided into two sections - one with four trays housing metal service cases (for small parts and fittings), and three metal drawers. Higher still are two shelves, and at the very top, a shelf complete with removable plastic bins.
